mmmmmint juleps

Tomorrow is a Big Day. It is Kentucky Derby Day and Cinco de Mayo and my birthday. And the moon is going to be a Supermoon, which means all kinds of interesting things will happen to the tides and pregnant ladies. And while I will not be anywhere near Churchill Downs or a cantina or a maternity ward, you absolutely will find me in the company of this handsome gentleman.

Here’s my recipe for Kentucky Mint Juleps:

Fresh mint

Sugar

Kentucky bourbon (may I suggest Woodford Reserve?)

Sparkling water

Shaved ice

Short straw (cut a little above the rim of your glass, so your nose is down near the mint)

First make a simple syrup, which is one part sugar to one part water, heated till the sugar dissolves.

While warm, add a bunch of mint leaves and stems. Let that steep and cool. Then strain out the leaves and chill the syrup.

May I offer you a julep? Why, yes, Colonel, I would love one! Did I mention it is my birthday?

Pack a glass (or silver julep cup) with shaved ice.

Depending on your-own personal taste, pour in more or less of a jigger of bourbon and about the same amount of the syrup.

Top with sparkling water, stir, and garnish with a sprig of mint and a short straw.

Mmmmm. I wonder what happens when you mix Kentucky bourbon with a Supermoon.

About Ginny O'Donnell

After reading a really nice obituary a few years ago, I considered what they'll write about me. "She worked all day, then went home and made supper." Except now, my husband has retired, so he makes the supper. Hm. I sound kinda lazy, but I'm always busy. You'll see. Part 2: I like my original About Me, so I'm keeping it intact. But now I, too, am footloose. Let's see what happens next, shall we? Part 3: Just to keep everything in perspective, I'm keeping parts 1 and 2 intact. Now, I am actively and happily NOT so footloose, doing my thing over at Cottage Door Press. And with it being off its training wheels, I will pick up my ginnygram pen again. Love!

  2. I still have the original hand- written recipe from my wedding shower for YOUR mint juleps! Last year here in Mexico we had a Derby party complete with “hot browns” burgoo and of course your mint juleps. We dressed, guests were required to wear hats and when it was time for the race we gathered around the big screen tv only to discover that, SHOCK, Mexican tv wasn’t COVERING the Run for the Roses! Graham quickly found it on line so about 25 people gathered around the lap top to watch! Good thing we had those juleps ahead of time!

Happy birthday Ginny Girl, happy Cinco de Mayo, and cheers to the frosty yummy mint julep! Enjoy your day! Besos y abrazos from Meh he ko!
